What is God Like?
By Kurt Bomar
What is God like? With School starting up I am reminded of an old Eastern analogy that compares God to an elephant. This story has been successfully used to damage the faith of Christian students.
It goes something like this. Four blind men approach an elephant and by feeling the elephant attempt to describe it.
The first man feels the trunk and says “God is like a snake.” The second feels a leg and says “God is like a tree.” The third feels his tail and says, “God is like a rope.” The fourth feels the side of the elephant and says, “God is like a wall.”
The purpose of the story is to tell Christians “You only have a limited perspective of God and there is truth about God that you don’t know and that other religions do know.”
It sounds good until the alert student asks “How would a man who sees the whole elephant describe it?
This is where Christianity has the advantage over other world religions. We can see what God looks like. He looks like Jesus! Col. 1:15 says Christ is the image of the invisible God. Philip the disciple asked Jesus one day to show them the Father. Jesus responded: “Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father.“ John 14:9.
While other religions describe limited truths about God, comprehensively they are wrong. God is not a snake, tree, rope, or wall; He is the real deal, the whole elephant! We can know him fully by studying his Son.
Teach your kids to defend their faith!
